Hong Kong, 19 September 2025 The much-anticipated Hong Kong Green Building Week 2025 (HKGBW 2025), co-organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), officially kicked off today with a launch ceremony at the Level 1 Atrium, MCP CENTRAL, Tseung Kwan O, generously sponsored by Henderson Land Group. The event was officiated by Miss Diane WONG, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, the Government of the HKSAR; Ir Prof. Thomas HO, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council; and Dr. CHEUNG Tin-cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council.

This year, HKGBW 2025 proudly welcomes karate athlete-singer NG Yip-kwan (James), former Hong Kong, China cycling team member Vivian MA, Hong Kong, China table tennis player Chelsea CHAN, and Hong Kong, China U22 basketball player Ryan CHAK as Green Building Ambassadors, each bringing fresh energy to promoting sustainable building practices across Hong Kong.

The kick-off ceremony gathered government officials, business leaders, and Green Ambassadors at Level 1 Atrium, MCP CENTRAL to mark the official start of the 13th edition of Hong Kong Green Building Week.

Hong Kong Green Building Week enters its 13th edition. Riding on the momentum of the 15th National Games, this year's theme "Green Building Get Set GOAL · Race to Carbon Neutrality!" sets the tone for a series of engaging activities. The ceremony featured a "Torch Relay" – symbolising the united power of government, business and community to drive green building forward. Together, the officiating guests and ambassadors ignited the flame of hope, embodying the shared goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Miss Diane WONG, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, the Government of the HKSAR, Ir Prof. Thomas HO, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council; and Dr. CHEUNG Tin-cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council officiated the ceremony. Alongside with Ir Albert CHENG, Executive Director of the CIC, Ir Harry LAI, Executive Director of the HKGBC, karate athlete-singer NG Yip-kwan (James), former Hong Kong, China cycling team member Vivian MA, Hong Kong, China table tennis player Chelsea CHAN, and Hong Kong, China U22 basketball player Ryan CHAK jointly lit the flame, symbolising the collective commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Delivering her speech at the event, the Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Miss Diane WONG, said that buildings account for 90 per cent of Hong Kong’s electricity consumption. “It is therefore necessary to promote green buildings and enhance building energy efficiency so as to reduce carbon emissions. The HKSAR Government will continue to implement relevant policies and measures, with a target of reducing the electricity consumption of commercial buildings by 30 per cent to 40 per cent and that of residential buildings by 20 per cent to 30 per cent by 2050 as compared to the 2015 level, and to achieve half of the above targets by 2035. With Hong Kong cohosting the 15th National Games, the Hong Kong Green Building Week this year would capitalise on sports as a gateway to engage the public in acquiring green buildings knowledge through interactive activities.” She hoped that learning through play, the public could integrate energy conservation and carbon reduction into their daily lives and work together towards carbon neutrality.

Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, stated, "Marking its 13th year, Hong Kong Green Building Week continues to grow in influence, thanks to widespread community support. Combining sports and innovation, this year's event allows people of all ages to personally experience the benefits of green building. We are delighted to welcome over 250 participating companies and institutions, with more than 300,000 employees joining the 'Biz-Green Dress Day', while the social media challenge attracted enthusiastic engagement, reflecting the strong public interest. The BEAM Plus registration has now surpassed 2,800 projects, covering over 8,800 buildings with a total floor area exceeding 90 million square meters, establishing a solid foundation for Hong Kong's sustainable development. We will continue to serve as a bridge, fostering collaboration between government, industry and the public to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal."

Ir Prof. Thomas HO, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, remarked, "The CIC remains committed to leading the industry's green transformation. As buildings are created for people, promoting green architecture must begin within the community. With the four dimensions of craftsmanship: 'Craftsmanship', 'Craftsman-soul', 'Craftsman-skills', and 'Craftsman-action' — we strive to contribute to sustainable development. This year, the CIC will host its triennial flagship event, "Construction Innovation Expo", inviting global experts to exchange ideas and promote innovation and collaboration. We are delighted to see Hong Kong Green Building Week 2025 integrates exercise and wellness into sustainable living. We hope this series of activities will mark the beginning of a new chapter for green architecture in Hong Kong, inspiring the construction industry and the wider public to join hands and Let’s GOAL — racing towards a carbon-neutral future.

As a prelude event to Hong Kong Green Building Week 2025, the "Let's GOAL! Biz-Green Dress Day" was successfully held on September 3, encouraging employees from both public and private companies and organisations to wear light and breathable attire to work while adopting green living habits in their daily routines. The extended "Let's GOAL! Biz-Green Outfits Social Media Challenge" has also concluded successfully. An awards ceremony was held during the kick-off event to present the "Biz-Green Style Award," "Most Popular Award," "Most Engaged Award," and the newly introduced "Most Energetic Award" to companies and organisations that demonstrated outstanding performance in the social media challenge, recognising their active contributions to promoting environmental protection and carbon reduction.

Starting today, a series of public experiential activities will unfold over two weekends, connecting green building with low-carbon living through diverse and engaging events. "Let's GOAL! Green Building Fair" is taking place until this Sunday (21 September) at the Level 1 Atrium, MCP CENTRAL, Tseung Kwan O. The public is invited to enjoy sports-themed booths while learning about green building in a fun and interactive exhibition.
