What is ANZ?
Advancing Net Zero is WorldGBC's global project which aims to promote and support the acceleration of net zero carbon buildings to 100% by 2050.
Why commit to Advancing Net Zero?
To avoid the potentially catastrophic effects of climate change and limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees, global greenhouse gas emissions need to peak by 2030. According to the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), buildings currently account for 39% of energy-related carbon emissions globally―with operational carbon emissions accounting for 28% while embodied carbon emissions account for the remaining 11%. Urgent and immediate action to decarbonise the built environment is therefore critical.
“Advancing Net Zero” is WorldGBC’s global project which calls for business, organisations, cities, states and regions to reach net zero operating emissions in their portfolios by 2030 and for all buildings to be net zero in operation by 2050. In a more recent “Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront” report, WorldGBC also calls for at least 40% less embodied carbon for new buildings, infrastructure and renovations by 2030 and to advocate for net zero operational and embodied carbon by 2050. In support of this global project, HKGBC commits to help the Hong Kong building and construction industry sector transition towards net zero in a high density high rise compact city context.

Can Hong Kong be the city advancing high density net zero?
The HKGBC has recently established a Sustainable Development Committee (SDC) to accelerate the decarbonisation of our built environment. This Committee will develop carbon reduction target setting tools and certification mechanisms; identify and drive multidisciplinary researches; and advocate for incentives, policy and regulatory reform that will facilitate Hong Kong’s transition towards a net zero.
Some challenges that will be tackled under this Committee include: how urban planning can contribute to a lower carbon footprint whilst enhancing liveability; what passive design and construction strategies are effective in creating super low energy highrises; what innovative active systems and renewable energy technologies can be integrated into new low/net zero carbon building design and in the low carbon retrofit of existing buildings; and how can we incentivise retro-commissioning and low carbon retrofitting in the Greater Bay Area and beyond…
