1 ADVANCING NET ZERO IDEAS COMPETITION 2021 E-BOOK WHY DO WE ORGANISE ADVANCING NET ZERO (ANZ) IDEAS COMPETITION? In addressing the urgency of the emergency of climate change, we must get our acts together to decarbonise before 2050 in Hong Kong. HKGBC started to organise the ANZ Ideas Competition in 2020. The Competition focused on the commercial buildings as this sector is a big spender of energy. It is responsible for 65% of Hong Kong’s total electricity consumption – making it the highest priority for net zero initiatives. That is why we invited expert professionals from around the globe to contribute innovative design ideas and practical solutions in two categories: (i) Existing Buildings and (ii) Future Buildings, both being Grade A office project sites in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. We organise this ANZ Ideas Competition with aspirational aims: Inspire the professionals to develop net zero ideas and solutions. Build a Knowledge Bank of net zero ideas and solutions for the industry, locally and globally. Accelerate the adoption of net zero ideas and solutions. Catalyse a review of how current building regulations and codes that may impede net zero ideas and solutions. Send a clear message to industry professionals that developers are now actively seeking to decarbonise their building portfolios. \\\[Professionals will need to step up their capabilities to provide such services to their clients, owners & developers. \\\] Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions: 28% from operational emissions, from energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% from materials and construction. In “Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront: Coordinated action for the building and construction sector to tackle embodied carbon”, WorldGBC has issued a bold new vision that: • By 2030, all new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have at least 40% less embodied carbon with significant upfront carbon reduction, and all new buildings are net zero operational carbon. • By 2050, new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have net zero embodied carbon, and all buildings, including existing buildings must be net zero operational carbon.
