Coming to the last Special Feature of this series, we will share with you the Winners of Special Citation on UN Sustainable Development of Green Building Award 2021 (GBA 2021). This year, six projects were accredited with a Special Citation as they were deemed to have achieved one or more United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and positively contributed to the development of a sustainable built environment.

The 17 UN SDGs represent the aspiration of all people on Earth to address the global problems we face together, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice. The planning, architecture and design of the built environment have an important role to play in regard to all of these goals.

Among the Special Citation Winners, InnoCell and On Tai Estate are the Grand Award Winners in the category of New Buildings – Completed Projects (Residential). Both have already been introduced in the previous issues. Let’s learn more about the other winning projects in this issue with us!

Artisan Garden

According to the GBA 2021 Jury Panel, Artisan Garden by New World Development Company Limited has responded to its geological challenges by applying passive design and fulfilling the Sustainable Building Design Guidelines on building setback and building separation to improve air ventilation and enhance the environmental quality at pedestrian level. The Panel praised Artisan Garden as a good example of a sustainable urban renewal project in Hong Kong. Through its design, air ventilation in the neighbourhood has been improved, and greenery has increased by 85%.

Disciplined Services Quarters for the Fire Services Department at Area 106, Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O

This project by the Architectural Services Department & the Fire Services Department is the first high-rise concrete Modular Integration Construction (MiC) building in Hong Kong. The GBA 2021 Jury Panel commented it for demonstrating a green approach to optimising efficiencies in resource management and operational performance throughout the building’s lifecycle. The design takes into full consideration the site’s constraints, surrounding context and topography to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly place that supports a harmonious community lifestyle. The adoption of MiC technology and its associated innovations is widely replicable in Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Terra Centre

The GBA 2021 Jury Panel remarked that this project by One University One Village, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning of Kunming University of Science and Technology is exemplary in pursuing the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. The project team has utilised local materials, local techniques and local labour to cater for local needs. The Terra Centre is more than a building project, it also serves as a platform for employing, educating and training the local community. This pilot scheme is significant in generating a ripple effect for the entire country and helping to address the issue of poverty.

Existing Buildings – Completed Projects (Institutional)
Tzu Chi Environmental Action Centre

According to the GBA 2021 Jury Panel, this project by Axis of Spin Architecture and Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation HK Ltd has successfully achieved many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It has revitalised a vacant and dilapidated village school by making good use of recyclable materials. Despite its small scale, the project aspires to create a piece of green architecture powered by solar energy, and has made full use of recycled DIY bricks where possible. In particular, the Panel appreciated how the project is educating the community about green and healthy living, while also engaging volunteers and connecting stakeholders to act together for environmental protection.

GBA 2021 received an overwhelming support from the industry with a record-breaking number of 100 nominations. Among the 80 Finalists, 39 Award Winners were announced at the Ceremony which included 4 Pioneer Awards, 10 Grand Awards, 23 Merit Awards and 6 Special Citations on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
