New Buildings – Projects Under Construction and/or Design (Institutional) Grand Award
E-Co Village at Lot B Tseung Kwan O Stage 1 Landfill

As a landfill revitalisation project launched by the Environmental Protection Department with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals as the operator, E-Co Village will transform its site from Garbage to Garden, turning the landfill into a place for public enjoyment and community connections. This project consists of two platforms, comprising a major camping ground, community farm, butterfly garden, children’s green education zones, green theatre and two demonstration Green Stations. Along the theme of turning waste into something useful, E-Co Village aims to use recycled building materials, such as displaced railway sleepers and palm fibre boards. It will also use a 100% renewable energy supply, and recycled greywater for irrigation.

The GBA 2021 Jury Panel lauded the project team for its successful attempt to adopt various innovative approaches to the sustainable design, transforming a seemingly polluted closed landfill site into an educational and recreational camping facility for public pleasure.

New Buildings – Projects Under Construction and/or Design (Residential) Grand Award
Jockey Club i-Village

The Jockey Club i-Village by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Leigh & Orange Ltd, has been designed to the highest sustainability standards through the use of highly adaptive sustainable and smart technology, providing an environmentally friendly and smart campus development. Due to its location on a sloping site, the roof line has been strategically developed into a socially animated circulation thoroughfare to create spontaneous communal interaction and connect the academic blocks in the north with the residences in the south.

The GBA 2021 Jury Panel highly appreciated the design team’s efficient use of digital tools, allowing simultaneous considerations of numerous site parameters such as the set-back, terrain levels, existing soil nails, and sightlines. The internal spaces were also digitally encoded to allow layout tests driven by functional optimisations and proximity to daylight.

New Buildings – Projects Under Construction and/or Design (Residential) Grand Award
Proposed Composite Development at New Kowloon Inland Lot No. 6627, No. 24-38 Tonkin Street & No. 240-240A Fuk Wing Street

The Proposed Composite Development Project of the Urban Renewal Authority and Wider Loyal Ltd aims to be the first private residential development built by Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) in Hong Kong. Since the majority of works are to be carried out in factories, the waste generated during construction process can be substantially reduced, while the on-site pollution and disturbances to the local neighbourhood will be minimised.

The GBA 2021 Jury Panel remarked that the project uses innovative ways to activate public spaces, enrich public life and engage communities, as evidenced by its setback of the building mass. To reduce the heat island effect, the development creates a new green urban oasis with multi-level greenery and high building permeability, including landscaped staircases and an urban plaza, all of which provide a greener environment for a better quality of life and a healthier community. All bathrooms and the majority of kitchens will be provided with natural lighting and ventilation through light wells, which will be opened at both the top and the bottom to create a chimney effect that efficiently introduces clean and fresh air from the sky garden to all residential units.
