[Press Release] Hong Kong Green Building Council’s Executive Director Appointed to Key Role in World Green Building Council

Hong Kong, 5 July 2021 – The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has recently announced the appointment of the Executive Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP as the Chair of its Asia Pacific Regional Network (APN). The HKGBC welcomes this news as the appointment signifies Hong Kong’s leading position in driving the development of the sustainable built environment in the global arena.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the Chair of the APN of the WorldGBC. Many places within the Asia Pacific are commonly facing huge challenges in advancing net zero, a global initiative driven by the WorldGBC. Yet, I firmly believe that by working closely together, the WorldGBC with all national GBCs can lead the industry to build a sustainable built environment for the generations to come. I am ready to bring the APN to new heights with collaborative efforts with other member GBCs, using my strengths in strategic management, networking and leadership for the benefit of all.” said Ir Dr Cary CHAN.

WorldGBC’s APN comprises 14 Green Building Councils based in the Asia Pacific region: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Taiwan. Asia Pacific region occupies sixty per cent of the world’s population with more than 2 billion living in urban areas. The urban population is expected to reach 3.3 billion by 2050, adding further demand for buildings. Set against this backdrop of huge growth, creating buildings that are low or net zero carbon is essential to ensure a high quality of life for people, minimise negative impacts on the environment, and maximise economic opportunities. The APN therefore aims to increase the engagement of the GBCs in collaborative projects that deliver impact in this important region, in alignment with the global WorldGBC strategy. The appointment of Chairman of the APN is a 2-year term from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2023.

Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP is a professional engineer and is the Executive Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council since 2016.  Over the years, Cary has carried out a lot of researches and pioneered many energy saving initiatives with substantial improvements in energy performance of buildings. Cary is also active in serving the professional and business communities with his expertise.
