AECOM Advances Hong Kong International Airport's pledge to become the World's Greenest Airport through Terminal 2

The opening of Hong Kong International Airport's new Terminal 2 (T2), a cornerstone of Airport Authority Hong Kong's (AAHK) Three-runway System (3RS), marks a major milestone in strengthening HKIA's position as a leading international aviation hub.

As the lead design consultant in this mega project, AECOM's multi-disciplinary team brought together expertise in mega project management, engineering and passenger terminal design to deliver a high-performance, sustainable terminal. AECOM also helped define embodied carbon quantification standards at the outset of this project.

Supporting HKIA's pledge to become the world's greenest airport, sustainability is embedded throughout the project, contributing to the achievement of BEAM Plus New Buildings Provisional Platinum rating — the highest qualification level. Key measures include the implementation of a high-performance façade that enhances thermal efficiency, natural daylighting and acoustic comfort. These are complemented by energy-efficient building services systems that reduce overall energy consumption.

HKGBC Member Showcase – Accelerate the Green Shift with Green Choices

The HKGBC held its inaugural Member Showcase on 2 June 2026, bringing together over 200 industry professionals for a vibrant day of exchange, innovation and collaboration. Despite the warm summer weather, the event was met with a hugely enthusiastic response and received very positive feedback from participating guests.

Under the theme "Accelerate the Green Shift with Green Choices", the Showcase served as a dynamic platform for connecting HKGBC Members, ranging from emerging innovators to established industry leaders, with stakeholders from across the built environment. Featuring a dedicated Exhibition alongside the Showcase Stage, it highlighted a diverse portfolio of green products, advanced materials and forward-thinking innovations that were both practical and impactful.

The Exhibition featured 18 participating Members showcasing cutting-edge solutions and products that were directly applicable to real-world building projects. From energy-efficient systems and smart technologies to innovative materials and retrofit solutions, the exhibits demonstrated how sustainable choices can enhance performance across the building life cycle, empowering stakeholders to make more informed and environmentally responsible decisions. A VIP tour of the Exhibition for HKGBC Directors and Committee Members held on the morning of the event further elevated its atmosphere, fostering deeper engagement and exchange with exhibiting HKGBC Members.

The afternoon Showcase Stage programme featured six Member's Sharing sessions, offering valuable insights into the latest advancements in sustainable building practices. Topics spanned a wide spectrum from advanced building and energy management systems to AI-driven indoor air quality optimisation, innovative building technologies and products, and effective lighting and façade strategies. Each topic was grounded in real-world applications and industry experience that are not commonly accessible, providing participants with a deeper understanding of how these innovations can be translated into tangible outcomes in actual projects.

The event provided valuable networking opportunities, enabling participants to connect, exchange ideas and explore potential collaborations.

Building on the success of this inaugural event, the HKGBC looks forward to further developing the Member Showcase as a focused yet high-impact platform that will continue to inspire innovation and drive collective action among the building industry.

Integration of Technological Innovation and Low Carbon Development
In his welcome remarks, Mr Howard LEE, Associate Director, GreenTech of HKSTP, noted that under the nation's 15th Five-Year Plan, a focus was being put on the dual control of carbon emission intensity and total carbon emissions. He stressed that Hong Kong should leverage technological innovation to respond actively to the national planning objectives and achieve carbon neutrality before 2050.  Ar. Dr Tony IP, MH, Member of the Industry Standards and Practices Committee of the HKGBC, followed this with an overview of the CIC Green Product Certification Scheme (CIC GPC), pointing out that innovative products could gain bonus points and a unique sustainability label, the InnoSmart Label.

Standing out through Certification: Licensees explain their Competitive Edge
During the session, representatives from Airdefender International and Optimix (Hong Kong) noted the tangible impact that the CIC GPC had brought to their businesses. Their insights highlighted a range of benefits including enhanced transparency in product performance, more effective sales engagement, and broader opportunities in green finance. This demonstrates that the CIC GPC not only advances the green transition of the construction industry, but also strengthens the market competitiveness of certified products.
