New World Development Marks New Milestone in Decarbonisation and Sustainable Finance

New World Development (NWD) continues to support Hong Kong’s strategic plan for net zero carbon by 2050 and to be a leading hub in sustainable finance.

NWD has committed to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C and Science Based Targets (SBT), a global call to action from the United Nations and business leaders to help limit global warming to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement. NWD is one of the 14 real estate companies globally, and the third in Asia, to have pledged to provide a clearly-defined path to reduce carbon emissions. The commitment covers the company’s major properties and construction activities in Hong Kong and mainland China. It steers the company to further decarbonise business operations, adopt more renewable energy and additionally set SBT in 2023 to reduce both direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2030 beyond existing goals.

To support their ambitious commitments, NWD reached a new milestone in sustainable finance as they became the world’s first real estate developer to issue a USD and an HKD Sustainability-Linked Bond (SLB). These transactions aligned with NWD’s latest Renewable Energy Roadmap and reaffirmed their commitment to achieving 100% renewable energy for NWD’s Greater Bay Area rental properties by 2026, which forms part of the company’s greater commitment to using 100% renewable energy for all Greater China rental properties by 2031.

To provide a timely Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure, NWD has recently published its inaugural interim ESG update. For more sustainability-related information, please visit NWD Sustainability Website.

CIC Green Product Certification Pilot Scheme 2.0 will be Open for Applications Soon

The CIC Green Product Certification Scheme, which currently comprises 28 product categories, is to certify different building and construction materials/products after a thorough environmental impact assessment. The Council continuously encourages industry stakeholders to adopt green products in Hong Kong’s building sector and consults the industry on setting professional and applicable assessment criteria. Applicants may provide suggestions on the assessment criteria to enhance the statutory and green construction materials requirements. The update will be reported to the committee members including the government departments, developers, industry, professionals, product designers and manufacturers. The Council was tasked with conducting a study and has devised the CIC Green Product Certification Pilot Scheme 2.0.

There are two stages of the Pilot Scheme and each will cover three different product categories. Stage one covers LED lighting, cables & wires and air handling unit (AHU), while product categories of stage two are cooling towers, water pumps and wall covering. Five quotas are set for each product category on a first-come-first-serve basis for each application.  The applicant is allowed to apply once for each product category.

Eligible applicants will have an exemption on the assessment fee so as to motivate the industry professionals to apply to the Pilot Scheme which will be open for application from 1 April till 30 September 2021. Application details including the application form, application guidelines and frequently asked questions are available at the CIC Green Product Certification Scheme’s dedicated webpage. Interested parties may submit applications online with supporting documents.  For enquiries, please reach HKGBC at 3994 8818 or via email: [email protected]

When Infrastructures Go Green

Infrastructure can be more than just supporting our daily lives. By incorporating sustainability principles throughout the building life cycle, infrastructure can be transformed into green assets with benefits to the people and planet.

As a Platinum-rated building under the BEAM Plus New Buildings in previous years, Kowloon City No. 1 and No. 2 Sewage Pumping Stations continue the journey of sustainability and have recently achieved the Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings. Photovoltaic panels were installed on the rooftop to generate renewable energy. In addition, green procurement and eco-friendly cleaning practices have also been applied in daily operations.

More Platinum-rated green infrastructures under BEAM Plus New Buildings can be found in Hong Kong, such as the Expansion of Tai Po Water Treatment Works and Ancillary Raw Water and Fresh Water Transfer Facilities. Explore more green infrastructures on BEAM Plus Online Exhibition now!

Kowloon City No. 1 and No. 2 Sewage Pumping Stations have achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings. The stations are well integrated with the neighbourhood by beautifying the areas with sloping planters and the water cascade.
