Environment and Conservation Fund Green Building Education and Capacity Building Programmes - Micro-credential Topical Course

Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), this micro-credential topical course series is designed to provide participants with more in-depth continuing education than traditional CPD webinars. It enables practitioners to construct weekend or after-hours study programmes that meet their development needs. Courses will be rolled out at a frequency of about 1-2 courses per month, throughout a period of two years from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2027. Participants taking 20 or more courses can apply for a skill enhancement certificate from HKGBC, certifying their significant efforts in studying green building.

Micro-credential Topical Course - Beyond Aesthetics: Quantifying the Performance of Green Roofs and Walls for Hong Kong Green Building Assessment

This course covers the key biophysical processes governing the performance of green roofs and walls in hot-humid regions. It introduces quantitative indicators for thermal, hydrological, ecological, and environmental performance of green roofs and walls. Participants will learn how to identify and compare major methods for assessing the performance of green roofs and walls, including field monitoring, numerical modelling, and simplified assessment tools, and gain practical insights into applying performance metrics of green roofs and walls in professional practice and green building frameworks.

This course will cover the following topics:

1.  Green envelopes in hot-humid regions

  • The roles of green roofs and walls in urban climate mitigation and adaptation in Hong Kong
  • From aesthetics to performance: energy, microclimate, water, and well-being considerations
  • Typologies and key design parameters, including substrate depth, species selection, irrigation strategy, and integration with building systems

2. Performance indicators

  • Thermal and energy-related indicators
  • Hydrological and environmental indicators

3. Measurement approaches and modelling methods

  • Field measurement techniques
  • Numerical modelling
  • Empirical and semi-empirical assessment tools

4. Linking quantified performance to the BEAM Plus assessment

  • Overview of relevant credit points within HKGBC BEAM Plus
  • Demonstrating performance: translating results into documentation for credit claims
  • Towards performance-driven green envelope design
