Mandatory CPD Event - Technical Visit to Olympian City

Hong Kong, like many developed cities in the world, needs out-of-the-box approaches to combat climate change and waste problems. Sino Group and the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) have collaborated on a research project on purification of food waste filtrate with microalgae.

Thanks for your support and the event is full house now.

This event is organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council Limited (HKGBC).

Hong Kong, like many developed cities in the world, needs out-of-the-box approaches to combat climate change and waste problems. Sino Group and the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) have collaborated on a research project on purification of food waste filtrate with microalgae.  The project has achieved marked improvement in water quality, reducing carbon emissions and providing raw materials for manufacturing biodiesel. Olympian City 2 is the first shopping mall in Hong Kong that applies algal treatment to purify food waste filtrate, marking a milestone for food waste management.

In addition, Sino Group, Arup and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have joined hands in the second phase of the first in-building hydropower system that makes use of unused water head in incoming water mains to generate electricity.  Installed at Olympian City 2, the system, featuring a novel vertical-axis turbine, has an output of 100Wh, and represents a six-fold leap from the first phase. The study has achieved encouraging results. Electricity generated is stored in a battery, and can be used to power the lighting system of a typical lift lobby.

In this visit, participants will have a chance to learn about the above innovations as well as other green measures in the mall, including a 500 kg high-efficiency food decomposer that can decompose 99.8% of food waste into vapour, and a glass imploder that crashes the glass bottles into cullet for producing eco paving blocks.
