CPD Event - Physical Seminar on Carbon Negative Concrete and Low-E Sun Nanocurtains
This seminar is jointly organised by the HKGBC and NAMI.
Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI), incorporated in 2006, is designated by ITC of the HKSAR Government as a Research and Development Center for nanotechnology and advanced materials. It undertakes and provides support for market-driven research and strives for commercialisation of the technologies to benefit the industry and the society.
(1) Low-E Sun Nanocurtains
Double-glazed low-E windows currently face challenges with oxidation and glare, while window films encounter concerns regarding their lifespan and cost. NAMI has developed the first and only long-lasting, low-cost, and easy-to-apply type of sun nanocurtains with exceptional energy-saving capabilities for various window shapes. This technology allows high visible light transmission, low reflection, and a significant blockage of total solar energy, contributing to substantial reduction in electricity consumption in buildings, and hence carbon emissions.
(2) Bio-based Carbon Negative Concrete
Using carbon-negative biochar in concrete for buildings is a promising solution to carbon neutrality. However, directly incorporating biochar into concrete would negatively influence its mechanical properties. By forming a novel core-shell aggregate (CSA) by encapsulating biochar with cementitious materials, a bio-based carbon negative concrete with high mechanical strength of over C30 is developed. With negative embodied carbon, this carbon-negative concrete supports the sustainable development and environmental policy of the HKSAR Government.
Speaker: Dr Tin LAU, Senior Technical Manager, Nano and Advanced Materials Institute
