CPD Webinar - Lightweight Concrete for MiC and GGBS Concrete for Foundation

The webinar recording will be available at HKGBC CPD Online Training Portal (https://onlinecpdtraining.hkgbc.org.hk/) later after the event.

This webinar is organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council.

Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) was established in 2006 by the HKSAR Government. Its mission is to fill the gap between research and application, and it aims to offer technology upgrades for Hong Kong’s various industries. In this webinar, two experts in material technology will present the following two topics:

(1) Modular Integrated Construction (MiC)

Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) is an innovative construction method with many advantages. However, some aspects of MiC technology need to be improved for better adoption in the Hong Kong market. The concrete MiC module is generally small in size due to weight limitation in hoisting operation. The steel MiC module is light-weighted and large-sized, but its mineral wool-based drywall system is not suitable for humid air conditions.

For better application of the MiC system in Hong Kong, NAMI has developed the first structural lightweight concrete for a hybrid MiC system in order to take advantage of both the concrete MiC system and steel MiC system. By using this structural lightweight concrete and structural innovations, this hybrid module could achieve a large module size (12m long), reasonable weight (<25 tons) and solid concrete wall concurrently. During the webinar, Dr Yanmin WU will introduce these innovations.

(2) Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS)

Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) is a cement replacement material that helps to decarbonise concrete. Although local regulation allows a maximum replacement of 75% of cement by GGBS, the use of GGBS higher than 50% is not common. One of the reasons is the low early strength development that is not favourable to the construction programme. In this regard, systematic research is recommended to be carried out to verify the early strength development and durability of concrete in different replacement percentages under different curing conditions. Considering the potential impacts of strength development time and the concrete volume of building construction, a research that will primarily focus on the use of GGBS concrete for pile foundation construction will be discussed. It is going to be the first cooperation among the Government, industry, academia and research sectors in the area of GGBS application in bored pile works. During the webinar, Dr Gordon LEUNG will introduce this cooperation initiative.

Speakers:

Dr Yanmin WU, Technical Manager, NAMI

Dr Yanmin WU received both his Bachelor degree and PhD degree from the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University. After two years’ working at Beijing on Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) design and tall building design, he then continued his career in Singapore at J. Ray McDermott (Singapore) for three years on various large-scale offshore structural design projects with the design consideration of strong storm and earthquake. Dr WU then continued his career at AECOM (Hong Kong) for more than nine years on tall buildings and complex steel structures before joining NAMI. His research interest is primarily on complex steel structures, application of new structural materials, innovative structural design, high-rise buildings and finite element simulation. Dr WU is a chartered structural engineer in China with project management professional (PMP) certification.

Dr Gordon LEUNG, Associate Director of R&D, NAMI

Dr Gordon LEUNG has 25 years of experience in the civil engineering field. He is a professional civil engineer and an applied researcher. Currently he is the Associate Director of Research & Development for the construction sector of NAMI, overseeing a wide range of R&D projects and applications such as sustainable asphalt and concrete materials, new generation of sprayed concrete, self-flowable backfill materials, concrete 3D printing, etc.
