Environment and Conservation Fund Green Building Education and Capacity Building Programmes - Micro-credential Topical Course

Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), this micro-credential topical course series is designed to provide participants with more in-depth continuing education than traditional CPD webinars. It enables practitioners to construct weekend or after-hours study programmes that meet their development needs. Courses will be rolled out at a frequency of about 1-2 courses per month, throughout a period of two years from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2027. Participants taking 20 or more courses can apply for a skill enhancement certificate from HKGBC, certifying their significant efforts in studying green building.

Micro-credential Topical Course - Whole Life Cycle Carbon Assessment (WLCA) for Buildings

Whole Life Cycle Carbon Assessment (WLCA) is an essential approach for quantifying and managing carbon emissions throughout the entire life cycle of buildings, from material extraction and construction to operation, refurbishment, and end-of-life stages. As global decarbonisation targets tighten, WLCA enables project teams to make informed, data-driven decisions that reduce both embodied and operational carbon, supporting the transition to net-zero buildings.

In modern sustainable development, where increasing emphasis is placed on low-carbon materials, circular-economy strategies, and energy-efficient design, WLCA plays a critical role in identifying carbon hotspots and evaluating mitigation options. Beyond compliance with green building certifications and regulatory requirements, WLCA facilitates the optimisation of design choices, procurement strategies, and long-term asset performance.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Whole Life Cycle Carbon Assessment (WLCA)
  • Carbon scope and boundaries (Modules A1–A5, B1–B7, C1–C4, and Module D)
  • Data requirements and calculation methodologies (aligned with standards such as EN 15978, ISO 14040/44)
  • Embodied vs operational carbon: key drivers and trade-offs
  • Integration of WLCA in design stages and project decision-making
  • Tools, databases, and digital workflows for carbon assessment
  • Decarbonisation strategies: material optimisation, circular design, and low-carbon systems
  • Alignment with green building rating systems (e.g., LEED, BEAM Plus) and net-zero frameworks
  • Case studies of WLCA application in real projects
