Trane Hong Kong has been honoured with two ASHRAE Regional XIII Technology Awards 2026 for delivering two chiller retrofit projects at Alexandra House in Central and Princess Margaret Hospital in Kowloon. Recognised in the “Commercial Buildings – EBCx” and “Health Care Facilities (Existing)” categories respectively, these projects fully demonstrate how innovative chiller upgrades can unlock substantial values from existing buildings. 

At Alexandra House, Trane modernised the 350,000 square foot facility’s chiller plant with five high-efficiency Trane® CenTraVac® water-cooled centrifugal chillers utilising hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant R514A, which has an ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) of less than 2. The chiller retrofit achieved a 25% reduction in total energy consumption in 2025. The transition to R514A also delivers a 99.9% reduction in direct refrigerant-related climate impact compared with traditional R134a (GWP = 1,430), supporting Hongkong Land’s long-term 2050 carbon neutrality goals.

At Princess Margaret Hospital, the chiller plant was retrofitted with high-performance Trane® Series R™ helical rotary chillers to address age-related performance degradation while delivering energy savings, maintaining occupant comfort, and supporting long-term decarbonisation goals. From April 2025 to March 2026, the project achieved a 35% year-over-year reduction in energy consumption, saving 685,311 kWh annually and demonstrating a model for low-carbon retrofits in Hong Kong's public healthcare sector.
