HK Electric’s Sustainability Report 2025

HK Electric, the main operating company of HK Electric Investments and HK Electric Investments Limited, is a major power utility in Hong Kong, serving more than 600,000 customers. Its newly released Sustainability Report 2025 outlines the Company’s approach to sustainability, key performance during the year, targets and future plans.
2025 marks the 135th anniversary of HK Electric, reaffirming the Company’s unwavering commitment to powering Hong Kong with a reliable electricity supply and supporting the city’s sustainable development. During the year, the Company launched a series of initiatives to celebrate its heritage and highlight how its engineering legacy continues to underpin robust operations and future progress.
For more than 135 years, HK Electric has evolved to meet new challenges. By strengthening its infrastructure and resilience, enhancing its operational standards and efficiency, adopting greener energy and embracing technology and innovation, the Company continues to provide its customers with a safe, reliable, clean and affordable electricity supply.

- Increased the gas-fired generation ratio at Lamma Power Station to 69% of total power output, reducing carbon emissions by 42% from the 2005 baseline, and made good progress with the construction of a new gas-fired generating unit;
- Achieved a supply reliability rating exceeding 99.9999% again, translating into less than 0.5 minute of unplanned power interruption per customer on average, and met or exceeded all 18 pledged Customer Service Standards;
- Completed advanced metering infrastructure and full-scale deployment of smart meters across its network, enhancing power-grid monitoring and fault detection while enabling its customers to manage their electricity usage more effectively;
- Introduced innovative technologies and new solutions to enhance supply reliability and resilience, including the commissioning of Hong Kong’s first Low-Voltage Direct Current System; and
- Continued to raise environmental awareness among the public and support the community through the HK Electric Volunteers Team as well as the Company’s Smart Power Services and its other flagship community and education programmes, including the Happy Green Campaign, Green Hong Kong Green project, CAREnJOY for the Elderly programme and University of 3rd Age Network.
Looking ahead, HK Electric plans to cease using coal for daily electricity generation by 2035 by replacing the remaining coal-fired generating units with cleaner and more efficient technologies. The Company is also assessing the viability of adapting its gas-fired generating units to utilise both natural gas and hydrogen while working closely with the HKSAR Government and strategic partners on the import of zero-carbon energy from the Chinese Mainland, in support of Hong Kong’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

HK Electric is progressively shifting from coal-fired to gas-fired generation and has achieved a reduction of more than 0.59 million tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions year-on-year in 2024, contributing to more than 45% of Hong Kong’s total reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the same period.
