Recognition of Hactl’s Green Office

In 2019, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) decided to renovate the 4/F to 6/F offices of its North Office Block. The office has been in use since 1998 and a refurbishment was certainly due. The core of the project was to improve the working environment for Hactl’s team, to showcase Hactl’s proud history and Hong Kong’s air cargo industry to visitors from around the world, and to stay loyal to the sustainability principles of Hactl's Green Terminal programme.

The refurbishment project has been awarded Platinum rating under the coveted BEAM Plus Interiors Version 1.0 following a tough two-year assessment.  Hactl Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Ms Amy LAM and the project team have recently received a certificate at the BEAM Plus Certificate Presentation Ceremony, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society.

Features which contributed to Hactl’s success include the use of LED lighting which has reduced lighting power consumption by over 30%, and the use of natural light which covers over 97% of the workstations. In addition, the lighting and MVAC (mechanical ventilation and air conditioning) systems have been replaced with highly energy-efficient models; and artificial lighting and air conditioning are now controlled by means of occupancy and CO2 sensors installed throughout the offices.

The refurbished office includes a number of human-centric features, which create a safe and enjoyable working environment for staff. Ergonomic workstation furniture adheres to occupational health and safety best practices, while open areas are designed to facilitate both relaxed business interaction and staff leisure breaks – a Hactl Library with a curation of over 300 books has been newly established, and extra recreation facilities such as billiard table and table football are also provided.

Another aspect of the refurbishment is its use of upcycled waste materials. Hactl collected waste timber from the local community, along with discarded wooden pallets and disused furniture from its own terminal operations, and transformed these into new furniture and art installations for the benefit and enjoyment of staff and visitors.

The BEAM Plus Platinum rating proves Hactl's success in creating an environmentally friendly, cultural and aesthetic environment that is unique within the industry. It also demonstrates that Hactl does not need a brand-new building to achieve sustainability: everything is possible if one is passionate about protecting the environment.
