Decarbonisation: A Shared Journey

Cleaner energy is important to realise the goal of decarbonisation.

Decarbonisation is an opportunity to transform, and it also tests the construction industry’s capability and capacity to make viable changes.

Mr KH MOK, Executive Director of Hip Hing Construction, shared his insight into the construction industry’s shared mission to reduce its carbon footprint. “Decarbonisation can’t spring from individuals. It takes everyone united behind something big. That is why we have proactively interacted and collaborated with business partners across various industries to pursue the goal. And we are glad that with concerted efforts, we are making progress.”

On the mission to realise decarbonisation goals, Hip Hing is committed to minimising the use of fossil fuels, maximising electrification and an earlier introduction of alternative fuel sources.

One of the strategies implemented is energy analysis. Hip Hing conducts comprehensive energy reviews across its projects each year, and it was revealed that up to 52% of energy consumed was generated by fossil fuel in 2021. As a result, Hip Hing’s Sustainability and Environment Team saw the need to break the current norm.

“We have worked with a start-up company and applied its innovative battery system called “Enertainer”. Compared with the conventional diesel generator, Enertainer will not produce point-of-use emissions such as CO, NOx, PM and HC, and its carbon footprint is around 20% of that of diesel generator. The direct combustion of fossil fuel on site is significantly reduced.” Mr Ken HO, Manager (Sustainability and Environment) explained.

Traditional diesel generators have been replaced by a battery energy storage system, “Enertainers”

Hip Hing sees the Enertainer as an effective innovation to realise decarbonisation and reduce fuel costs. Currently, they have deployed 13 Enertainers for their projects, and become the largest user of Enertainers in the Hong Kong construction industry.

Hip Hing has also been participating in Shell’s CO2 Offset Programme - Nature Based Solutions (NBS). More than 100 vehicles from their Group companies and projects are involved. For every liter of Shell petrol or diesel used by their vehicles, trees will be planted to conserve the environment, offset CO2 emissions and achieve carbon neutral operations.

To extensively lower fuel consumption, Hip Hing has deployed electric vehicles.

In addition, Hip Hing has given its support to CIC’s “Sustainable Finance Certification Scheme”, an initiative to promote the development and adoption of green finance in the local construction companies. The proceeds raised under the Programme will be used for financing projects with environmental benefits.

Subcontractors remain key stakeholders of the company’s business, and Hip Hing has encouraged its subcontractors to join forces on the journey of decarbonisation. While projects adopting clean energy involves B5, an alternative involving 5% biodiesel, they also promote this green practice among the subcontractors, which has received positive responses.

“Together with the existing built environment, the construction industry accounts for around 70% of all the carbon emitted in Hong Kong. There is no room for us to procrastinate. Our Sustainability and Environment team, comprising around 40 colleagues, will continue to deploy a unique decarbonisation plan, whereas electrification is our coming major task.” Mr KH MOK said.
