Environmental sustainability in Singapore began some 40 years ago before even the term is coined. The Garden City approach to city planning, early master planning of the entire island and Active Beautiful and Clean (ABC) Water Programme are just some examples of such early initiatives. This presentation looks at the unique challenges of taking Singapore to the next lap of environmental sustainability dealing with issues such as social, economic and environmental sustainability in a holistic manner.

Mr Tai has worked on a number of key projects that won local and international recognition, most notably being The Bayshore and Far East Square, both were awarded FIABCI Prix d’Excellence in their respective categories. Mr. Tai’s works were also featured in a URA exhibition entitled “20 under 45” in 2004 to recognise emerging architects under the age of 45.

During his term of Presidency of the Singapore Institute of Architects in 2007 and 2008, Mr Tai Lee Siang consolidated the institute’s “Blue Print” to establish numerous firsts. He led the inauguration of ARCHIFEST – a new festival for the purpose of promoting and advancing architecture excellence not just amongst the professionals but also with the general public. The festival extended to a month-long event, attracting no less than 20,000 participants in the second year. Mr Tai also started the first Practice Convention 2009 – a strategic forum to Address Practice Course (APC) – a key education agenda for preparing young graduates to site for Professional Practice Examination. As the chairman for REACH on Physical and Environmental Sustainability – a feedback unit to the government, Mr Tai continues to devote his passion on green and sustainability frontiers.

He is currently the Director at DP Architects, focusing on large-scale urban planning projects such as the Masterplan of Orchard Road Experience Guide Plan.
