WSP's Digital Solutions Win First-ever BIM Automation Arena Challenge

WSP has recently clinched three awards at BIM Automation Arena 2023 conferred by the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM) and Cyberport, in recognition of its two in-house developed systems, ETE Structural Analysis & Design Programme and Light+.

As the first competition and showcase on BIM and programming in Hong Kong, the competition recognises digital solutions that can further improve construction project management quality and effectiveness in design and documentation, visualisation and collaboration, and interoperability and data exchange.

Standing out amongst 25 finalists from the AEC and IT industry, WSP's winning digital solution ETE was recognised with the Silver Award in Software Application (Standalone / SaaS) category and The Most Popular Award, demonstrating WSP's best practices of harnessing the potential of BIM technology to realise structural design automation to enhance productivity and design quality.

ETE Structural Analysis & Design Programme

A comprehensive system integrating all essential digital application systems, ETE can be used for rapid modelling, analysis, element design, design report generation, member information output, CAD drawings production for RC members, structural layout drawing production, and RC detailing drawing production.

It significantly increases the productivity of structural engineers, saves time in communication between engineers and technicians, enables information exchange between systems for design coordination, and can implement seamless data flow through the project to ensure accuracy and reduce error.

In each project, ETE allows rapid and iterative programme update to adapt to the demand of a constantly changing environment. The handy tool also enables instant feedback from the structural performance which helps engineers to have a better understanding of design optimisation, improving the overall efficiency of engineers, drafting technicians, and BIM technicians.

Light+

Light+, WSP's robust lighting design system with BIM integration, was also recognised with Honourable Mention. The system leverages the company's self-developed Revit Plugin to enable automatic extraction of geometry and design data from BIM models, automatic generation of results with desired lighting arrangement options, and rapid production of lighting models, wiring circuitry and layout plan in a few seconds, streamlining the workflow of lighting design.

Trane Hong Kong Helps Hongkong Land Embrace Sustainability with New Climate Solution

Trane Hong Kong recently unveiled its successful project for LANDMARK, located in the core business district of Central and owned by Hongkong Land. The team provided a retrofitting solution to the central cooling system for LANDMARK covering Gloucester Tower, Edinburgh Tower, York House, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Landmark shopping mall, assisting Hongkong Land to achieve its sustainable development goals.

Excellent Solution to Tackling Sustainability Challenge

With Sustainability at the heart of its business, Hongkong Land needed a greener solution to reduce its energy footprint in LANDMARK. Trane provided four 1,200-ton SimplexTM and two 2,200-ton Trane® DuplexTM CenTraVac® water-cooled centrifugal chillers with hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant R514A for two chiller plants in Gloucester Tower and Edinburgh Tower respectively. This not only helped Hongkong Land reduce the operation and breakdown maintenance costs, but also optimised the chiller plant efficiency.

Frankie CHAN, Managing Director of Trane Hong Kong said, “The LANDMARK project not only fulfils our commitment to premier performance, superior customer service, and world-leading expertise in climate solutions, but also sets an excellent example for more chiller owners in the real estate industry, especially those with sustainability ambitions.”

The 2,200-ton Trane® DuplexTM CenTraVac® centrifugal chiller @HFO R514A

The project utilised energy-efficient chillers with R514A, an eco-friendly HFO refrigerant, to achieve outstanding chiller plant performance, resulting in lower energy use and operating costs, enhanced occupant comfort, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. R514A features the highest performance among all next-generation refrigerant options today, with zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 2.

BEAM Plus Sticker

BEAM Plus stickers are a new promotional tool offered by the Hong Kong Green Building Council to BEAM Plus certificate holders. Designed to be prominently displayed on BEAM Plus-certified buildings, the stickers  provide project owners with a flexible and easy-to-use way of promoting their BEAM Plus assessment results to the public.

For every project attaining BEAM Plus certification in 2022 or later, the Council will provide four free stickers, each measuring 200 mm (W) x 102 mm (H). Featuring a frosted front and waterproof surface, the stickers include key project details such as the BEAM Plus assessment tool adopted, the year of certification, and the rating achieved. They can be displayed on the exterior or interior of the certified building – such as on the outer face of glass doors, at concierge desks, inside elevators, in lift lobbies, and so forth – offering project owners new opportunities to showcase their efforts in green building and sustainability.
