Skills Upgrading Series for Green Building Practitioners - (10) Environmental Assessment and Environmental Monitoring & Audit for Green Building Projects (9 and 23 Sep 2023)
Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited.
Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the series of Skills Upgrading courses are designed to give participants continuing education that is more in-depth than traditional CPD webinars. The first round of this Skills Upgrading programme started in March 2021 and was concluded in February 2022. From August 2022 to September 2023, another round of Skills Upgrading courses will be organised again by the HKGBC to enable practitioners to construct individual programme of weekend studies that meet their development needs.
Course No. 10: Environmental Assessment and Environmental Monitoring & Audit for Green Building Projects
(This is the last course in the 2nd round of Skills Upgrading Series training.)
This “Environmental Assessment and Environmental Monitoring & Audit for Green Building Projects” course, which consists of two half-day lectures (total 6 hours) and is co-organised with BEAM Society Limited, will cover the following topics:
1. Methodology for Environmental Assessment
- Methods for assessing direct impacts and indirect impacts
- Methods for air (excluding indoor air quality), noise (excluding indoor noise), and sewerage impacts, habitat mapping, and ranking based on conservation values, tree protection
2. Methodology for Environmental Monitoring & Audit (EM&A)
- Baseline monitoring and impact monitoring for air, water, and noise
- Ecological field surveys
- Regulatory and performance requirements (i.e. Limit and Action Levels)
- Mitigation and control measures
3. Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
- Objectives of EMP
- Environmental policy, and organisation
- Implementation of EMP
- Training
- Compliance with regulatory requirements
- Mitigation measures and controls
- Monitoring and review
4. Case Studies
- Selected case studies from construction projects
5. BEAM Plus
- Related credits in BEAM Plus NB v2.0 to be briefed by BSL staff
Target audience:
Those who have not received formal training in environmental assessment and monitoring of construction projects but want to broaden their knowledge in this aspect.

Trainers:
Ir Dr H.F. CHAN, Managing Director, CINOTECH Consultants Limited; Chairperson, CEM BEAM Expert Panel, BEAM Society Ltd
Ir Dr CHAN has more than 40 years of experience in the field of environmental management, environmental planning and pollution control in Hong Kong, including more than 5 years in the Environmental Protection Department. He has lectured at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the City University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at The University of Hong Kong. He is a Fellow member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals, Hong Kong Institute of Environmental Impact Assessment, Hong Kong Institute of Acoustics, an Honorary Fellow member of the Energy Institute, and a Registered Asbestos Consultant. He is also the Founding President of the Hong Kong Institute of Water and Sanitation Safety.
