Skills Upgrading Series for Green Building Practitioners - (9) Noise and Vibration in Sustainable Built Environment (12 and 26 Aug 2023)

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited

Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the series of Skills Upgrading courses are designed to give participants continuing education that is more in-depth than traditional CPD webinars. The first round of this Skills Upgrading programme started in March 2021 and was concluded in February 2022. From August 2022 to December 2023, another round of Skills Upgrading courses will be organised again by the HKGBC to enable practitioners to construct individual programme of weekend studies that meet their development needs.

Course No. 9: Noise and Vibration in Sustainable Built Environment

This “Noise and Vibration in Sustainable Built Environment” course, which consists of two half-day lectures (total 6 hours) and is co-organised with BEAM Society Limited, will cover the following topics:

  • Basic concepts:  period, wavelength, frequency, dB, sound pressure, sound power, sound intensity, A-weighting, sound measurement
  • Sound propagation:  attenuation along distances, 6 dB rule, reflection, refraction, diffraction, absorption, barriers, reverberation time, room modes
  • Human response:  human sensation, health effects of noise, speech intelligibility, acceptable noise levels
  • Vibration:  types of vibration, resonance, damping, Q factor, vibration isolation, transmissibility, isolation efficiency, vibration dose value
  • Noise control: control at source and along the path, enclosures and silencers, insulation, absorption materials, insertion loss, mass law, sound reduction index, impact noise isolation
  • Vibration control:  mass-spring-damper system, vibration isolation design procedure, issues to be considered, different types of isolators, inertia bases
  • Related credits in BEAM Plus NB v2.0 to be briefed by BSL staff
  •

Target Audience:

Those who have not received formal training in noise and vibration. Those who have attended the same course on 5 Feb 2022 and 19 Feb 2022 need not attend as the course contents are similar.
