Founding Members
In 2009, four industry leaders united to establish the HKGBC - Construction Industry Council (CIC), Business Environment Council (BEC), BEAM Society (BEAM), and Professional Green Building Council (PGBC).
The founding members represent every stage of the building life cycle and green building value chain – CIC drives sustainable construction among various sections of the construction industry, BEC unites business sector users and supporters of sustainable buildings, BEAM Society helps measure, improve and label green buildings, and PGBC promotes sustainable planning, design construction, management and maintenance of built environment.
Public participation is the final pillar supporting the transformation of our built environment.
Construction Industry Council
Since 2007, CIC has represented the construction industry. Its main functions are to forge consensus on long-term strategic issues, convey the industry’s needs and aspirations to Government, as well as provide a communication channel for Government to solicit advice on all construction-related matters. The CIC represents various sectors of the construction industry including employers, professionals, academics, contractors, workers, materials suppliers, independent persons and Government officials.
Business Environment Council
The Business Environment Council (BEC) is the longest running independent, non-profit organisation in Hong Kong promoting corporate social and environmental responsibility. Established in 1989, BEC offers sustainable business solutions covering baseline assessment, advisory, research, training and award programs for companies across all sectors and at any stage of their corporate sustainability journey. Over the past two decades BEC has expanded to a network of 20,000 companies with a combined market capitalisation of HK$3 trillion and 1 million employees.
BEAM Society
The BEAM Society is the non-profit organisation that owns and operates, on a self-financing basis, the Building Environmental Assessment Method, since 1996. BEAM is the essential tool for tracking green buildings quality, and helping industry and the public choose sustainable buildings. The society oversees the on-going development and implementation of BEAM standards for building assessment, performance improvement, certification and labelling. This is undertaken as an industry led, voluntary initiative to benefit the community.
Professional Green Building Council
The PGBC is a non-profit making research and education institute to promote a better sustainable built environment through professional involvement of HKIA, HKIE, HKILA, HKIP and HKIS members. It brings together professionals, including architects, engineers, landscape architects, surveyors and planners to formulate better environmental practices.
